Large cortege on May 13th!

In year 1000, king Harald Hardråde founded a city at the head of the Oslofjord. On October 6th, 1875, Kristiania Sporveisselskab opened the first tramway in Oslo. Together with AS Oslo Sporveier and Oslo 1000 years, we will mark this with a large cortege consisting of both trams and buses on May 13th.

The cortege starts at Majorstuen at 10:35 am and will follow the route Bogstadveien - Hegdehaugsveien - Welhavens gate - Stortorvet - Jernbanetorget - Schweigaards gate - Oslo gate to Oslo Hospital around 11:30 am. Some cars will return from here, others will continue to Holtet.

KSS 96 And the cortege will be exciting! Joining trams and buses are KSS 6 (horse tramcar), KSS 32, HkB 8, KES 307+347, KSS 96+220, OS 6, OS 70+647, Hippopotamus 745, Goldfish 196, Worldmaster 720, BFB 49, SBC 067, SBC 082, Høka train 234+563, OS 717, SBC 252, SM91/M25 298, SM83 207, ST89 586, MAN articulated bus and SL79 129 (the Tiger tram).

There will be public rejoicing on the same day in the area between Geitabru and the harbour. LTF and Sporveien will set ut a stand with a stage in and near the "triangle" between Geitabru and Saxegaardsgata. The programme for Oslo 1000 years are comprehensive this day, and we recommend that everybody pays attention in the daily press.

The work to make such a rejoicing is quite extensive. The unrolling itself of a cortege is complex, but first the units joining the cortege have to be operative. At the same time we are working hard to get done with the cars we have been working with during some time.

The use of historical stock in Oslo

After 1997, there hasn't been used historical stock in Oslo. In connection with the jubilee, we are granted to use old cars in a cortege. To do this, many papers have to be written to counter the Railway Inspectorate's and the Tramway Division's demands. This work is proceeding parallelly to the restoration of the cars.

What's happening with the cars?

KSS 6: The horse tramcar has had problems with the axles after a heavy derailment in connection with the jubilee in 1950. We will this year try to repair this to avoid futher damages.

KSS 32: The completion has been delayed due to get necessary financing. This is now done, and the work to complete the interiour is given to the joiner who we used when the body was restored.

KES 307: The Blue tram motor car's interiour must be recontructed completely. For this, we use both wood saved from tramcars that were trashed in 1928 and partly we construct the parts from scratch. We do this on our own workshop, so we have invested in a big joiner machine.

OS 745: The turbine bus has for at time had problems with a carburettor in addition to electric faulties. The carb is now overhauled and installed, and we hope this will reduce the problems.

OS 720: The bus have to go trough a EU control every year due to the new rules. Some lacks have to be repaired. The speedometer is defect, and some welding of rust has to be done.

OS 234+563: The tramcars were repainted last year and need numbers and inscriptions. However, this isn't simple, and much detective work has been carried through to find the correct numbers.

OS 196: In spite of that it is one of the much mentioned tram classes in Oslo and the tramcar that provoke most feeling among tramcar drivers, Goldfish of the type B has never been used in corteges before! After it was taken out of service in 1985, 196 has not been much used. Some time ago, we made the car operative and repaired the faults we know about. Together with 234 and 563, the car was repainted last year and needs numbers and inscriptions. In addition, we have to repair an air leak that we didn't repair satifactory last time.

C-4649: The BFB bus has had a problem with the charging during some time. After Scania gave up, we have continued the fault finding without results, but the work is intensified constantly! Can any members help us?

LTF needs your help!

To get everything ready to May 13th, we need your assistance. All cars must be cleaned and made ready. We will do this on the working evenings, Tuesdays and Thursdag from 6 o'clock at the Tramway Museum Vognhall 5, Majorstuen, Oslo.

Ornaments from the Ullevål hageby line

After the section Adamstuen - Ullevål hageby was renovated, the ornaments disappeared from the wire posts. After some detective work, we found out that the ornaments were being restored. However, Sporveien decided not to put up the old ornaments, but ordered new ones in plastic instead. The old restored ornaments were given to LTF for use at Vinterbro Electric Tramway outside Oslo.

We thank Sporveien for this magnificent present!
