Picture of the Month, March 2004 ![]() The picture shows Brill class car no. 155 in the loop at Etterstad. The tram was built by J. G. Brill for Kristiania Sporveisselskab. The electrical equipment was delivered by the General Electric Company. The tram was 11,2 m long, 2,0 m wide and weighted 15,2 tonnes. Under Kristiania Sporveisselskab, it had the number 539, under Oslo Sporveier, it was renumbered 155. The tram entered service on 7th July 1921, was discarded on 22nd May 1966 and was scrapped on 6th June 1967. "The American" had its weaknesses. Especially there were problems with the truck, which got several cracks, and the controllers didn't handle the large amounts of currents they were supposed to handle. The tram was rebuilt with a new melded truck on 20th November 1934 with reinforced side frames, and looked after that more like the regular SS class trucks. The controllers were replaced by Siemens controllers, which didn't get burned so easily. Photo: The Tramway Museum's Archive, probably Per Lyng. |
