Picture of the Month, February 2000 ![]() We're saying goodbye to the rebuilt Høka tramcars with this picture of no. 208, followed by Gothenburg trailer no. 590, on line 15 towards Majorstuen at Nybrua, on the 21st of December 1999. Only two trains like this (201+587 and 203+590) are still in service in the beginning of February, and the transport company, Oslo Sporveier (Sporveien), plans to take them out of service by the 1st of March, 2000. No. 208 was formally taken out of service on the 1st of February, 2000, while trailer no. 590 still is in service. The rebuilt Høka tramcars, SM83 class, were rebuilt i the period 1984-91 from the Høka tramcars, SM53 class, by Sporveien's workshop. No. 208 was originally Høka tramcar no. 223 and was put into service on the 25th of June, 1953. The contractor was Hønefoss Karosserifabrikk, Høka. At the same time as Sporveien got new articulated tramcars, they also started an extensive rebuilding of the Høka tramcars to introduce complete one-man service on all tramway lines. No. 223 was rebuilt to one-man operation in 1983. One also planned to build Høka tramcars with "light rail standard", so they could be used for 10-15 years until enough articulated tramcars were put into service. No. 223 was taken out in 1987, and on the 18th of April, 1988, it was put into service as SM83 class with the number 268. The tramcar also got the name Zagreb. On the 1st of July, 1994, the tramcar was renumbered to no. 208. Some of the electrical equipment come from AEG. The motors come from Hägglund. No. 208 was formally taken out of service on the 1st of February, 2000, and is placed in Grefsen tramshed by the 3rd of February. Gothenburg's S27 class trailers was delivered by Hägglund in 1953. The tram class was called ST89 in Oslo. S27 no. 449 in Gothenburg became ST89 no. 590 in Oslo when it was sold on the 27th of November, 1985. They got a light rebuilding and has later shown to be very successful. The rebuilding works on the ST89 class trailers went on untill 1992. It may also be mentioned that Sporveien ended up with 10 ST89 class trailers, while they had 11 SM83 class tramcars. They needed one more trailer. This became ST55 class trailer 565, delivered in 1957 by Strømmen, rebuilt to one-man operation in 1984, rebuilt to ST86 class standard in 1986-87, and taken out of service in the middle of December 1999.
